Smoking Policy

The Altona Junior Football Club recognizes that passive smoking (inhaling second-hand smoke) is hazardous to health and that non-smokers, in particular children, should be protected from tobacco smoke. Passive smoking can lead to other serious illnesses such as bronchitis, lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chest illnesses in children. Accordingly, the following policy has been developed by the Altona Junior Football Club to help protect people’s health. The move to go Smoke Free also complements the Altona Junior Football Club’s desire to create a healthy family and friendly environment. Our club believes that such an environment and image will be advantageous in attracting new members and positively promoting the club in the community. Legislation and the legal duty of care also provide reasons to have a Smoke Free club. Under common law the Altona Junior Football Club has a legal duty of care to ensure that employees, volunteers, players and officials are not exposed to potentially harmful situations. The Occupational Health and Safety Act also stipulate that employees and working volunteers must have a safe environment to work in.

Designated Smoke Free Areas The Altona Junior Football Club requires the following areas to be Smoke Free:
• Club and social rooms
• Administration and office areas
• Changing rooms
• Toilet blocks
• Indoor spectator viewing areas
• Playing areas
• Eating areas
• Spectator viewing areas
• Near entries and exits of buildings, facilities and the ground

Behavioural Expectations The Altona Junior Football Club recognizes that role modelling can have a significant impact upon the junior members of the club. Hence, the following individuals and groups will refrain from smoking while they are acting in an official capacity for the club or while in club uniform:
• Coaches (when coaching or representing the club)
• Trainers (when training players)
• Officials (when officiating for the club)
• Volunteers (when working for the club)

One Punch Can Kill Campaign

AJFC Supporting STOP. One Punch Can Kill Campaign
Get on Board Vikings!

Complementing our Pathways Program for the Under 17s transitioning onto Senior football, the Boys attended a Leadership night at the Altona RSL on Tuesday. Partnered with the Altona Football Club, the program included;
• Senior Coach Saade Ghazi addressing Altona’s future Senior Players.
• Altona Football Club Senior Leadership Group; Jayden Post, Joel Magnabosco and Steven Kennedy supporting their coach and contributing a valued perspective from ‘on and off the field’.
• Under 17A Coach John Szanyi addressing his squad, in preparation for the 2017 Season and beyond.

The night was highlighted with the attendance of Caterina Politi. She is the mother of 22yr old David Cassai, who was killed in a “one punch” incident in Rye on NYE in 2012. She now campaigns for the STOP. One Punch Can Kill program and is a driving force behind the support for changes to laws surrounding these events that shatter families.

Caterina’s visit is a big deal to the Club. The Under 17s are at a pivotal age where incident such as David’s increase in chance and it is important to educate our young men about the importance of thinking before you act and to remind them that their actions have consequences.

The night for the Under 17s was a chance to forget about football for a minute and for us as Parents to think about our growing families. What happened to David Cassai (or the young man charged over the incident) can happen to your child and lives are changed forever! If we can reduce the chances of this occurring within our community, we will!
The AJFC Pledge

The AJFC are pledging $5 for every game our Junior teams win this season and will be presenting Ms Politi with a cheque on Presentation Day at the end of the 2017 Season.
Here's where you can help…
If you would like to pledge also (it is up to you how much), please email Vito Rubino, AJFC President, with your details and pledge amount, and we will keep everyone posted through our social media of the running tally throughout the year.
ajfcpres@gmail.com

It may be $1 or $2 per team win, or a straight donation – Any amount is appreciated and we aim to raise funds and awareness for this fantastic campaign that can affect us all.

A big thank you to the Altona RSL for the use of the room on Tuesday night. It was a wonderful sense of community and though emotional, it was a great night.
